Instructions for Making the The Super Scarf Crochet Pattern

Foundation Row (Starting the Length)

  • Begin with a slip knot on your hook.
  • Work 90 fdc (or until piece measures approx. 65 in. long). This will form the length of the scarf.
  • Tip: If you are unfamiliar with the fdc stitch, you can instead ch 92, then dc in the 4th ch from hook and dc across (90 dc). The fdc method is recommended because it creates a stretchier and neater edge.

Row 1

  • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout).
  • Turn work.
  • Dc in next st and in each st across.
  • You should have 90 dc at the end of the row.

Row 2 -10 (or to desired width)

  • Ch 3, turn.
  • Dc in each st across.
  • Repeat this row until your scarf measures about 6 in. wide (approx. 10 rows). Adjust the number of rows if you prefer a wider or narrower scarf.

Fastening Off

  • At the end of your final row, yarn over and pull through to secure.
  • Cut yarn, leaving a 6-8 in. tail.
  • Use a yarn needle to weave in ends neatly along the edge.

Optional Fringe

  • Adding fringe gives the scarf a stylish finish and extra coziness.
  • Cut strands of yarn approx. 10-12 in. long. For a fuller look, use 2-3 strands per fringe group.
  • Fold strands in half.
  • Insert hook into edge of scarf at the desired location, pull folded loop through, then pull yarn ends through loop.
  • Tighten gently to secure.
  • Repeat evenly across both short edges.
  • Note: The sample scarf used Red Heart Soft (size 4) in Off White for contrasting fringe. You may also use leftover Charisma yarn (size 5) for a matching look.

Blocking (Optional but Recommended)

To give your scarf a professional finish:

  • Lay flat on a surface.
  • Gently shape edges with your hands.
  • Since the yarn is acrylic, use steam blocking: hover a steam iron or garment steamer above the fabric without touching it. Allow scarf to cool and dry flat.

Gauge Check (for consistency)

If you want your scarf size to match the given measurements:

  • Work a 4 in. × 4 in. swatch in dc.
  • You should have 7 dc across × 5 rows tall.
  • Adjust hook size if necessary.

Finished Measurements

  • Length (without fringe): 65 in.
  • Width: 6 in. (adjustable by working more or fewer rows).

Summary

By working lengthwise in simple dc stitches, you’ll quickly create a chunky, cozy, and beginner-friendly scarf with clean vertical lines.

This project is perfect for practicing fdc, working evenly spaced dc rows, and customizing with fringe for added flair.

With only 3 skeins of bulky yarn and a large P (11.5 mm) hook, you’ll have a finished Super Scarf ready in no time.
