The Loopy Little Flower pattern

The Loopy Little Flower pattern

Skill Level: Intermediate (due to post stitches and the “tricky” Round 3)

Pattern Type: Decorative crochet motif

Terminology: US Crochet Terms

Pattern Description

The Loopy Little Flower is a textured, two-color crochet motif with beautifully rounded petals that stand out from the background.

This small but intricate pattern starts with a magic circle and works outward in three rounds. The petals are created by working into both chain spaces and around post stitches, giving them depth and definition.

It’s perfect for embellishing hats, scarves, bags, blankets, or any crochet project that needs a cheerful floral touch.

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: At least two contrasting colors of yarn. Choose yarns of the same weight for the best results. Worsted-weight cotton or acrylic works well for a sturdy flower, while DK or sport-weight yarn gives a smaller, more delicate look.
    • Color A – Center of the flower
    • Color B – Petals
  • Hook: A size suitable for your yarn (e.g., 4.0 mm / G-6 for worsted weight, 3.5 mm for DK)
  • Notions:
    • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
    • Scissors
    • Stitch marker (optional, for keeping track of the first stitch in each round)

Stitches & Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • ch sp – chain space
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • fp hdc – front post half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • st – stitch
  • rnd – round
  • {…} – work all instructions inside the brackets into the same stitch or space
  • (…) – number of stitches at the end of the round

Special Techniques

Magic Circle (Adjustable Ring):

Form a loop, insert your hook into the loop, pull up a loop, ch 1, then work the required stitches into the loop before pulling it tight.

Front Post Half Double Crochet (fp hdc):

Yarn over, insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the stitch (not into the top loops), yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Invisible Join:

Fasten off your yarn, thread the tail onto a needle, pass it under both loops of the first stitch of the round, then back down into the top of the last stitch worked. This creates a seamless finish.

Instructions for Making the Loopy Little Flower Pattern:

Preparation

Begin with Color A and a magic circle.

Round 1 – Center of the Flower

Center of the Flower
  • Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch).
  • Work 8 sc into the magic circle.
  • Pull the circle tight to close the hole.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first sc.

(8 sc total)

Tip: Keep your stitches snug so the center remains neat.

Round 2 – Setting Up Petal Bases

Setting Up Petal Bases
  • With Color A, ch 3 (counts as first dc).
  • In the same st, work dc, ch 4.
  • In each remaining st around: {dc, ch 4} in the same stitch.

At the end of the round, you should have 8 dc and 8 ch-4 spaces.

  • Close the round with an invisible join if you plan to change colors for Round 3.

Round 3 – Petal Formation (The Tricky Part)

Petal Formation
  • Switch to Color B.
  • Join with a slip stitch into any ch-4 space from Round 2.

For each petal:

  1. Into the ch-4 space: Work 10 hdc. These form the curve of the petal.
  2. Down the side: Work 9 fp hdc around the dc from Round 2 directly below. This wraps the stitch and adds depth.
  3. Move immediately into the next ch-4 space and repeat from step 1.

Continue all the way around.

Important: When you finish the 9 fp hdc around the dc and start climbing “back up” into the ch-4 space, make the first hdc tight. This prevents loose, floppy loops and keeps petals uniform.

  • End with an invisible join into the first hdc of the round.

(80 hdc + 72 fp hdc total)

Finishing

  • Fasten off and weave in all ends securely.
  • If needed, lightly steam-block the flower to shape petals evenly.

Tips & Variations

  • Petal Size: For fuller petals, add more hdc into each ch-4 space. For daintier petals, reduce the number slightly.
  • Color Play: Try using a gradient yarn for the petals for a soft ombré effect.
  • Layering: Make two flowers of different sizes and sew one on top of the other for a layered look.
  • Attachment: Sew directly onto garments or accessories, or leave a long tail after Round 3 for easier stitching onto projects.

Pattern Recap

  • Round 1: 8 sc into magic circle (8 sts).
  • Round 2: {dc, ch 4} in each st around (8 dc, 8 ch-4 sps).
  • Round 3: In each ch-4 space: 10 hdc; around each dc: 9 fp hdc. Invisible join to finish (80 hdc, 72 fp hdc).

You now have a Loopy Little Flower – a cheerful, textured floral motif that works beautifully for appliqué, embellishments, and creative crochet projects.
