Instructions for Making the Skipton Hat Pattern:
Work the Headband
- Foundation Row: Using the smaller hook (3.5mm/US 4/E), Ch 17. Then, work 1 Htr in the 3rd Ch from the hook, and work 1 Htr in each Ch to the end. Turn your work. You should have 15 Sts.
- Rnd 1: Ch 3, then work 1 Htr BLO in each St to the end. Turn your work.
- Repeat Rnd 1 a further 58 times, creating a total of 60 rows.
- Join: Join the top of the last row to the bottom of the first row by working a row of Sl St through both thicknesses.
Work Main Body of Hat
- Preparation: Turn your work 90 degrees, so you are now working into the sides of the rows you just created.
- Rnd 1: Using the larger hook (5mm/US 8/H), Ch 2. Evenly work 90 Htr around the headband. This can be easily calculated by working 3 Sts across each 2 rows. Place a Removable Stitch Marker to indicate the end of the Rnd. You should have 90 Sts.
- Note: You are now working in rounds of continuous crochet. At the start of a new Rnd, work directly into the first St from the previous Rnd without joining or turning.
- Rnd 2: Work 1 Htr in each St to the end of the Rnd.
- Repeat Rnd 2 a further 13 times more, for a total of 15 Rnds.
Decrease for the Crown
- Rnd 1: 13 Htr, 1 Htr2tog, Rep from to end of Rnd. (84 Sts).
- Rnd 2: 12 Htr, 1 Htr2tog, Rep from to end of Rnd. (78 Sts).

- Rnd 5: 9 Htr, 1 Htr2tog, Rep from to end of Rnd. (60 Sts).

- Rnd 9: 5 Htr, 1 Htr2tog, Rep from to end of Rnd. (36 Sts).
- Rnd 10: 4 Htr, 1 Htr2tog, Rep from to end of Rnd. (30 Sts).
- Rnd 11: 3 Htr, 1 Htr2tog, Rep from to end of Rnd. (24 Sts).
- Rnd 12: 2 Htr, 1 Htr2tog, Rep from to end of Rnd. (18 Sts).
