    • You’ll need one O’Go to complete the hat.
  • Yarn Weight: Medium (4)
  • Hook: U.S. size 7 (4.5 mm) Susan Bates® Silvalume crochet hook (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Gauge: 15 sc and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm]
  • Notions:
    • Susan Bates® yarn needle
    • Scissors
  • Measurements: One size fits most adults

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:

  • Beg = Begin(ning)
  • Ch = Chain(s)
  • Cont = Continue(ity)
  • Dc = Double crochet
  • Rep = Repeat
  • RS = Right side
  • Sc = Single crochet
  • Sl st = Slip stitch
  • Sp(s) = Space(s)

Instructions for Making the Red Heart Crochet Granny Stripes Bucket Hat:

Important Notes:

  • Cut the plastic tie from the O’Go carefully to separate colors A, B, C, D, and E.
  • Ch 3 at the beginning of a round counts as a dc.
  • When changing color: work to the last 2 loops on hook, draw new color through, then continue.

Crown (Top of Hat):

  • With color B, ch 4.
  • Round 1: Work 7 dc in the 4th ch from hook (8 dc total including beg ch). Join A with sl st to top of beg ch-3.
  • Round 2: With A, ch 3. Dc in same sp as sl st. 2 dc in next dc; rep around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. Break A.
  • Round 3: Join E in space between any two groups of 2 dc. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp. 3 dc in next sp between groups; rep around. Join, break E. (8 groups of 3 dc)
  • Round 4: Join D in sp between groups. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp. 3 dc in center dc of next group; 3 dc in next sp; rep around, ending with 3 dc in last group’s center dc. Join, break D. (16 groups)
  • Round 5: Join A. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp. 3 dc in center dc; (3 dc in next sp) 4 times; rep, ending with (3 dc in sp) 3 times. Join, break A. (20 groups)
  • Round 6: Join C. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp. 3 dc in next sp; rep to last group, 3 dc in center dc. Join, break C. (21 groups)
  • Round 7: Join B. Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp. 3 dc in next sp; rep around. Join, break B.
  • Round 8-15: Repeat round 7 with these colors: A (8th rnd), E (9th), D (10th), A (11th), C (12th), B (13th), A (14th), and E (15th).

Brim:

  • Brim rounds alternate RS and WS.
  • Round 1 (RS): Join D with sl st in any dc (center back). Ch 1, sc in each dc around (63 sc). Join A with sl st, turn.
  • Round 2 (WS): With A, ch 1. Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next; rep around. Join C with sl st, turn. (84 sc)
  • Round 3 (RS): With C, ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join B with sl st, turn.
  • Round 4 (WS): With B, ch 1. Sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next; rep around. Join A with sl st, turn. (126 sc)
  • Round 5 (RS): With A, ch 1, sc in each sc around. Join with sl st. Fasten off.
