  • With MC, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc). Work 9 dc into ring. Join. (10 dc)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, then 2 dc in each dc around. Join. (20 dc)
  • Rnd 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat around. Join. (30 dc)
  • Rnd 4: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat. Join. (40 dc)
  • Rnd 5: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, 1 dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat. Join. (50 dc)
  • Rnd 6: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, 1 dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat. Join. (60 dc)
  • Rnd 7: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, 1 dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat. Join. (70 dc) Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.

Motif Ring (make 6 motifs)

  • With Contrast A, ch 4, join to form a ring.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). (1 dc, ch 1) 11 times into ring. Join. (12 dc, 12 ch-1 spaces)
  • Rnd 2: Join Contrast B with sl st to any ch-1 space. Ch 2, make beg cluster, ch 1. Cluster in next ch-1 space, ch 1; repeat around. Join.
  • Rnd 3: Join MC with sl st to any ch-1 space. Ch 3, 2 dc in same space. 3 dc in next ch-1 space; (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 space (corner); repeat to form square motif. Join. Fasten off.
  • Sew the six motifs together at sides to form a ring.

Attach Top

Attach Top

Using the long yarn tail from the Top, whipstitch the Top of the hat to the upper edge of the Motif Ring, sewing through back loops to keep the seam flat.

Brim

Brim
  • Join MC with sl st to bottom edge of Motif Ring. Ch 3.
  • Rnd 1: 1 dcbl in next sc, 2 dcbl in next sc; repeat around. Join. (approx. 105 dc)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in each dc around. Join.
  • Rnd 3: Ch 3, 1 dc in same space, 1 dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat. Join. (approx. 140 dc)
  • Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 2. Fasten off.

Edging & Finishing

Edging & Finishing
  • Top Edging: Join MC with sl st to dc at top of any motif, ch 1, sc evenly around (70 sc). Join and fasten off.
  • Bottom Edging: Work as for Top Edging but do not fasten off until complete.
  • Weave in all ends securely.
