Pattern Description:
Create charming leaf-shaped coasters with this easy-to-follow crochet pattern using US terms. Worked in rounds, the design forms a detailed leaf with a defined tip, veins, and a small stalk.
The finishing touch is a delicate picot edging that adds texture and elegance. Perfect for 4-ply or light DK cotton, each coaster measures approximately 15cm x 11cm.
The pattern includes clear instructions for stitches, shaping, and finishing, including weaving in ends and blocking to achieve a crisp, professional look.
Materials Needed & Measurements:
- 4ply or light DK cotton.
- Hook: 3.5mm hook.
- Notions: A yarn needle is implicitly needed for weaving in ends, and water for blocking.
- Measurements: Finished coasters measure approximately 15cm x 11cm / 6in x 4½in.
Stitches & Abbreviations Used:
The pattern uses US terms and includes the following stitches and abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble
- dtr = double treble
- sl st = slip stitch
- ch sp = chain space
- dc2tog = yarn round hook, insert in first dc, draw up loop, yarn round hook, draw through 2 loops (2 loops left on hook), yarn round hook, insert in next dc, draw up loop, yarn round hook, draw through 2 loops (3 loops left on hook), yarn round hook and draw through remaining 3 loops
- sc picot = sc, 1ch, sl st in top of sc just made, by inserting the hook under both the front horizontal loop and the left hand vertical loop of the sc and pulling yarn through
Instructions for Making the Leaf Coasters Pattern:
Make an Adjustable (‘magic’) Loop:
- Begin by creating an adjustable (‘magic’) loop.
Rnd 1
3ch, work 15dc into the loop, then sl st in the top of the initial 3ch.
- Result: You should have a total of 16 dc.
Rnd 2
2ch, work 1dc in the next dc, then 1ch.
- Repeat [dc2tog in the same dc and the next dc, then 1ch] around the entire round.
- Finish by working a sl st in the top of the 1st dc.
- Result: This round creates 16 dc clusters and 16 1ch sps.
Rnd 3
Work a sl st in the first 1ch sp, then 1ch.
- In the same ch sp, work 3sc.
- In the next 1ch sp, work (2sc, 1hdc).
- In the next 1ch sp, work (2hdc, 1dc).
- Work [3dc in next ch sp] 4 times.
- In the next 1ch sp, work (2dc, 1tr).
- In the next 1ch sp, work (1tr, 2dc).
- Work [3dc in next ch sp] 4 times.
- In the next 1ch sp, work (1dc, 2hdc).
- In the next 1ch sp, work (1hdc, 2sc).
- Work 3sc in the last ch sp.
- Join with a sl st to the 1st sc of the round.
- Result: You will have a total of 48 sts.
Rnd 4
Work 1ch, then 1sc in the 1st sc, followed by 2ch.
- Repeat [skip 1 st, sc in next st, 2ch] around the entire round.
- Finish with a sl st in the 1st sc.
- Result: This round should result in 24 2ch sps.
Rnd 5
Work a sl st in the first 2ch sp, then 1ch.
- In the same 2ch sp, work 3sc.
- In the next 2ch sp, work 3sc.
- In the next 2ch sp, work (2sc, 1hdc).
- In the next 2ch sp, work (2hdc, 1dc).
- Work [3dc in next 2ch sp] 6 times.
- In the next 2ch sp, work (2dc, 1tr).
- In the next 2ch sp, work (2tr, 1dtr).
- Work 2ch (this creates the Point of the leaf).
- In the next 2ch sp, work (1dtr, 2tr).
- In the next 2ch sp, work (1tr, 2dc).
- Work [3dc in next 2ch sp] 6 times.
- In the next 2ch sp, work (1dc, 2hdc).
- In the next 2ch sp, work (1hdc, 2sc).
- Work [3sc in next 2ch sp] twice.
- Join with a sl st in the 1st sc of Rnd 4.
- Result: You will have 72 sts + 2ch sp (at the leaf point).
Stalk
Chain 7ch.
- Work a sl st in the 2nd ch from your hook, and then continue working a sl st in the next 5ch.
Rnd 6 (Edging with Picots)
Work 1sc in the 1st sc of Rnd 5, then 1sc in the next sc.
- Work an sc picot in the next sc.
- Repeat [2sc, sc picot] around the leaf until you reach the ch2 sp (Point of leaf).
- In the 2ch sp at the leaf point, work (2sc, 3ch, sl st in 1st ch, 2sc). This creates a prominent picot at the tip.
- Continue on the other side of the leaf: Repeat [sc picot, 2sc] until you reach the base of the stalk.
- Finish with a sl st in the base of the stalk.
Finishing
- Cast off your work.
- Weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle.
Block the coaster by lightly spraying it with water, carefully shaping it into the desired leaf form, and leaving it to dry flat.
