Pattern Description:
This cheerful baby quilt uses just one jelly roll and a few yards of white fabric to create a colorful, beginner-friendly design.
Measuring 51″ square, the quilt features simple piecing with minimal cutting, making it quick to sew. Perfect for gifts, donations, or a fun weekend project.
Materials Needed & Measurements:
- 1 jelly roll (precut 2.5″ strips)
- 2 yards white background fabric
- Backing fabric: approx. 3 ½ yards
- Batting: 55″ x 55″
- Binding fabric: ½ yard
Instructions for Making the To The Point Jelly Quilt Tutorial:
Step 1: Preparing the Fabric
Begin by unrolling your jelly roll and pressing the strips flat. The jelly roll will provide a colorful variety of fabrics, which will form the main design of the quilt.
From the white fabric, cut strips to the same 2.5″ width so they can pair easily with the jelly roll pieces.
Since the design is straightforward, you won’t need to spend hours cutting intricate shapes, just work with strips and triangles. This makes it a great first project for those new to quilting.
Step 2: Creating Strip Units
Sew one jelly roll strip to one white strip along the long edge, using a ¼” seam allowance. Continue this process until you have multiple two-strip sets. Once stitched, press the seams toward the darker fabric.
Next, subcut these strip sets into squares. Each square will combine color and background fabric, which will later be sewn into triangles to form the pointed design.
Step 3: Making the Triangles
To create the signature “point” look, take each strip-pieced square and cut it diagonally from corner to corner.
This will give you half-square triangles that feature one side of white and one side of the jelly roll fabric.
Mix and match the triangles so that the colors are well distributed across the quilt. Play with the arrangement before sewing to ensure a pleasing balance of shades and prints.
Step 4: Laying Out the Quilt Top
On a large surface or design wall, arrange the triangles into rows. The pointed pattern will begin to take shape as you alternate the position of the fabric, one triangle pointing up, the next pointing down. Continue this layout until the quilt top reaches a 51″ x 51″ square.
Take your time during this step. A good layout ensures that the quilt looks visually balanced, especially when using a jelly roll with many different colors and prints.
Step 5: Sewing the Rows
Carefully sew the triangles together in rows, using a ¼” seam allowance. Press the seams consistently, alternating directions row by row, to reduce bulk.
Once all rows are assembled, join them together to complete the quilt top. After sewing, give the quilt top a good press with an iron so it lies flat and smooth.
Step 6: Adding the Backing and Batting
Create your quilt sandwich by layering the backing (right side down), batting, and quilt top (right side up). Smooth out any wrinkles and pin or baste the layers together.
Choose a simple quilting design such as straight-line quilting or gentle diagonals. This keeps the look clean and ensures the colorful fabrics remain the focal point.
Step 7: Binding the Quilt
Once quilting is finished, trim any excess batting and backing. Prepare binding strips from the ½ yard of binding fabric, fold them in half lengthwise, and press. Sew the binding around the edges of the quilt, mitering the corners neatly.
Finish by hand-stitching or machine-stitching the binding to the back for a polished edge.
Final Touches
When complete, the quilt will measure approximately 51″ x 51″, a perfect size for a baby quilt, toddler blanket, or donation project.
The bright jelly roll fabrics against the crisp white background create a modern, playful design that looks much more complicated than it actually is.
