Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6) crochet hook
  • Notions:

  • Measurements: Each finished square measures approximately 5 x 5 inches (12.5 x 12.5 cm) when blocked.

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • ftr – feather stitch (described below)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over

Instructions for Making the Feather Stitch Square Motif:

Note: This pattern is worked in rounds. Change colors as desired at the end of each round for a striped effect.

Round 1:

Using Color A, make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, 3 dc in ring; repeat from to twice more, ch 2, sl st to top of beginning ch-3 to close round. (You should have 4 sets of 3 dc clusters with ch-2 corners.) Fasten off Color A.

Join Color B in any ch-2 corner sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same corner sp, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp; repeat from to two more times, ch 1, sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off Color B.

Join Color C in any ch-2 corner sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner; repeat around. Sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off Color C.

Join Color A in any ch-2 corner sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner. Ch 1, ftr in next 3-dc group from 2 rows below, ch 1, ftr in next 3-dc group from 2 rows below, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp; repeat around. Sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off Color A.

Join Color B in any ch-2 corner. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner, [ch 1, dc in ch-1 sp between ftr sts] across side, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner; repeat around. Sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.

Round 6: (Final Border Round)

Join Color C in any corner sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner, sc in each st and ch-1 sp across to next corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner; repeat around. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
