Instructions for Making the Crochet Heart Pattern:
Follow these step-by-step instructions to crochet your heart:
Getting Started
You will start with a magic ring. If you prefer not to use a magic ring, you can begin by chaining 4 and slip stitching into the first chain to create a ring, then work into that ring. Be aware that this method might result in a small open hole in the center of the heart.
Round 1

- Ch 2.
- Into the magic ring, make 3 tr, 4 dc, tr, 4 dc, 3 tr.
- Ch 2, and sl st into the magic ring.
- Pull the yarn end to close the magic ring tightly.
- Note: At this point, you can stop here if you want to make mini crochet hearts.
Round 2

Continue working in joined rounds, working into the stitches of the previous round.
- Sc in ch-2 sp.
- Where is the ch-2 sp? You will start by working into the chain-2 space formed by the ch 2 made at the beginning of Round 1. You will also finish the round by working into the chain-2 space made at the end of Round 1. Both of these chain spaces lie alongside the neighboring treble crochet stitches.
- Make (2 hdc and 1 dc) in the next st.
- Make 3 dc in the next st.
- Make 2 dc in the next st.
- Make dc in the next 4 sts.
- Make (dc, tr, dc) in the next st.
- Make dc in the next 4 sts.
- Make 2 dc in the next st.
- Make 3 dc in the next st.
- Make (1 dc and 2 hdc) in the next st.
- Sc in ch-2 sp.
- Sl st in sl st from the previous rnd.
- Note: You can stop here to make a medium-size heart.
Round 3

Continue working in the round.
- Sc in the first 2 sts.
- Make (2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st) three times. This means: 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st.
- Sc in the next 6 sts.
- Make (sc, hdc, sc) in the next st.
- Sc in the next 6 sts.
- Make (1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st) three times.
- Sc in the next 2 sts.
Finishing Your Heart

To finish your heart, you will typically use an invisible join and then weave in your ends.
Invisible Join
- Cut yarn, leaving a 6″ yarn tail.
- Pull the yarn through the last stitch.
- Use the yarn tail to thread a tapestry needle.
- Insert the needle under both top loops of the first stitch of the previous round. Pull snug, but not too tight.
- Insert your needle into the top of the last stitch of the current round, poking the needle down between the two top loops.
- Pull the yarn snug so that the invisible join mimics the size of the rest of the stitches.
- Note: While an invisible join is recommended to mimic the look of a stitch, a user also successfully ends Round 3 with a slip stitch join, which is an acceptable alternative based on personal preference.
Weaving in Ends
After making your join, you will weave in the ends as normal. It is also recommended to tighten up the magic ring one more time before weaving in the ends.
Stuffed Crochet Heart Option
For those who wish to create a puffy heart, you can do so by sewing two hearts together and stuffing them with a small amount of polyfill.
