Instructions for Making the Color Burst Crochet Heart Pattern:

Step 1: Foundation Circle
Begin with your first color.
- Make a magic ring (or ch 4 and sl st to form a ring).
- Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first tr), then work 15 tr into the ring. Join with a sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (16 sts total)
- Fasten off and change color.
This completes the base of the sunburst circle.
Step 2: Sunburst Petals
Switch to your second color for the petal-like burst.
- Round 2: In any st, join yarn and ch 3. In same st, work 1 tr, 1 ch.
- Into the next st, work 2 tr, ch 1. Repeat (2 tr, ch 1) in each st around.
- You should have 16 pairs of trebles, separated by 1-ch spaces.
- Join with sl st into top of first ch-3. Fasten off.
The circle now looks more floral and textured.
Step 3: Expanding the Circle
Take your third color.
- Round 3: Join yarn into any ch-1 sp. Work 3 tr into sp.
- Continue working 3 tr into each ch-1 sp around.
- You should have 16 clusters of 3 tr.
- Join with sl st. Fasten off.
This round gives the motif more body and prepares it for shaping.
Step 4: Shaping the Heart
Switch to your fourth color (the outline).
- Round 4: Begin in any st. Ch 3 (counts as tr). Work into the next few stitches as follows to form the first rounded “bump”:
- 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in next st, 2 tr in next st
- Work 1 tr in each of the next 3 sts.
- In the next st, work 1 tr, 1 dtr, 1 tr (this forms the point of the heart).
- Work 1 tr in each of the next 3 sts.
- To form the second rounded bump, work 2 tr in next st, 1 dtr in next st, 2 tr in next st.
- Continue with 1 tr in each st until you reach the starting point.
- Join with sl st, fasten off, and weave in ends.
Now you have a neat, symmetrical heart.
Finishing Touches
- Blocking: For a flatter heart, lightly steam block or pin it to shape.
- Variations: Use pastel colors for a soft look, bold brights for a lively effect, or a single solid shade for simplicity.
- Uses: Sew onto blankets, attach to cards, string into garlands, or make into coasters.
Tips for Success
- Keep your stitches consistent; looser tension will make a softer, larger heart.
- Change colors neatly by fastening off at the end of each round and weaving in ends securely.
- Experiment with metallic or variegated yarns for added interest.
