Best For: Adding a decorative edge to blankets, shawls, scarves, and cardigans

Materials

  • Yarn: Scheepjes Stone Washed (DK weight), 78% Cotton / 22% Acrylic
  • Hook: 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Notions: Scissors, yarn needle, stitch markers (optional)

Gauge (not critical for borders)

Approximately 18 stitches x 10 rows = 4″ x 4″ in double crochet using DK weight yarn and 3.5 mm hook.

Stitches and Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • cl – cluster: (yo, insert hook, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2) repeat 3 times in same stitch, yo, pull through all loops
  • puff – puff stitch: (yo, insert hook, yo, pull up loop) 4 times in same stitch, yo, pull through all loops
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS/WS – Right Side/Wrong Side

Yarn Requirements

  • For edging a standard baby blanket (~36″ x 36″), you’ll need about 120-150 yards.
  • For a throw or afghan (~50″ x 60″), plan for 250-350 yards depending on border width and yarn thickness.

Pattern Notes

  • Work the border in rounds if going around a project.
  • This pattern creates a gentle wave effect with puff “dots” and textured clusters in between.
  • You can modify the stitch counts to make the border narrower or wider.

If your base fabric doesn’t have a border yet: Join yarn with sl st in any corner. Ch 1, sc evenly around the edge, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc.

Round 1 – Setup

Ch 1, sc in each st around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc.

Round 2 – Cluster and Puff Base

Ch 3 (counts as dc), skip 1 st, cl in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Adjust stitch spacing at corners to maintain a flat edge. Join with sl st to top of ch-3.

Sl st into next ch-1 space. Ch 2 (does not count as st), puff in ch-1 space, ch 2, dc in top of next cluster, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top of first puff.

Round 4 – Finishing Scallops

Sl st into next ch-2 space, ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc) in ch-2 space (forms small scallop), sl st in top of puff, sl st in next dc). Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

  • Steam block or lightly wet block your finished piece to smooth and shape the border.
  • For garments or wearable items, test drape before attaching.
