Pattern Description:

This is a beginner-level crochet scarf pattern worked in one piece, lengthwise, using four colors of Lion Brand® Soft Ball yarn

It incorporates stitches like single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), and a unique 2 double crochet cluster (Cl) and single crochet in the 3rd loop (sc-3rd) to create texture. The finished scarf is adorned with fringe.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: Lion Brand® Soft Ball (Art. #141) in the following colors and quantities:
    • #146 Cosmos (1 ball) (A)
    • #133 Gazelles (1 ball) (B)
    • #102 Pink Sox (1 ball) (C)
    • #103 Juiced (1 ball) (D)
  • Hook: Lion Brand® crochet hook size J-10 (6 mm).
  • Notions: Lion Brand® large-eyed blunt needle.
  • Measurements: Approximately 6 x 64 inches (15 x 162.5 cm), not including the fringe.

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:

  • beg = begin(ning)
  • ch = chain
  • Cl (2 double crochet cluster): Yarn over, insert hook in indicated st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (2 loops rem on hook), yarn over, insert hook in same st and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook (3 loops rem on hook), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
  • dc = double crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • rem = remain(ing)
  • rep = repeat
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc-3rd (single crochet in 3rd loop): Insert hook in 3rd loop of indicated hdc and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
  • sk = skip
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Instructions for Making the Cluster Crochet Scarf Pattern:

Scarf Main Pattern

Begin with yarn color A, ch 156.

  • Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across – you will have 155 sc in this row.
  • Row 2: With A, ch 1, turn, sc in each st across and change to B in the last st.
  • Row 3: With B, ch 1, turn, hdc in each st across and change to C in the last st.
  • Row 4: With C, ch 1, turn, sc-3rd in each st across and change to D in the last st.
  • Row 5: With D, ch 1, turn, sc in first st, ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st; rep from across and change to A in the last st – 78 sc and 77 ch-1 sps.
  • Row 6: With A, ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in each st and ch across and change to C in the last st – 155 sts.
  • Row 7: With C, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), turn, sk first 2 sts, Cl in next st, ch 1, sk next st, Cl in next st; rep from to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, dc in last st and change to B2 dc, 76 Cl and 77 ch-1 sps.
  • Row 8: With B, ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, Cl in first ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next Cl, Cl in next ch-1 sp; rep from to last Cl, ch 1, sk last Cl, Cl in beg ch-4 sp, dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-4 and change to D2 dc, 77 Cl and 76 ch-1 sps.
  • Row 9: With D, ch 4 (counts as dc, ch 1), turn, sk first Cl, Cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next Cl, Cl in next ch-1 sp; rep from to last Cl, ch 1, sk last Cl, dc in top of beg ch-3 and change to A2 dc, 76 Cl and 77 ch-1 sps.
  • Row 10: With A, ch 2 (does not count as a st), turn, hdc in each st and ch to beg ch-4 sp, hdc in beg ch-4 sp, hdc in 3rd ch of beg ch-4 and change to B155 sts.
  • Row 11: With B, rep Row 5 and change to C in the last st.
  • Row 12: With C, ch 1, turn, sc in each sc and ch across and change to D in the last st – 155 sc.
  • Row 13: With D, rep Row 3 and change to A in the last st.
  • Row 14: With A, rep Row 4, but do not change yarn color in the last st.
  • Row 15: With A, ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.

Fasten off after completing Row 15.

Finishing Touches

  • Fringe:
    • Cut strands of yarn approximately 12 in. (30.5 cm) long.
    • For each fringe, hold 3 strands of yarn together and fold them in half.
    • Use a crochet hook to draw the fold through the edge of the scarf, forming a loop.
    • Pull the ends of the fringe through this loop and then pull to tighten.
    • Make 11 fringes along each short end of the Scarf, using yarn color that matches the stripes.
    • Trim the fringe evenly to about 5 in. (12.5 cm) long.
  • Weave in ends: Use your large-eyed blunt needle to weave in all remaining yarn ends for a neat finish.
