Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn:
    • Medium Weight Yarn (Category 4)
    • Colors: Turquoise and White
    • Suggested: ZZ Twist Yarn by Lion Brand
  • Hook Size: 3.5 mm (Recommended: Clover Amour 3.5 mm Hook)
  • Other Notions:
    • Polyester Fiber Filling
    • Two 9 mm Black Plastic Safety Eyes
    • Tapestry Needle
    • Scissors

Abbreviations & Stitches Used:

  • mr = Magic Ring
  • ch = Chain
  • sl st = Slip Stitch
  • sc = Single Crochet
  • inc = Increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • dec = Decrease (single crochet 2 stitches together)
  • BLO = Back Loop Only
  • F/O = Fasten Off

Note: Work in continuous rounds unless otherwise indicated. When working in rows, join with a slip stitch and chain 1 at the end of each row.

Instructions for Making the Blue Whale Crochet Pattern:

Body (Turquoise & White Yarn):

  • With turquoise yarn, start with 8 sc in a magic ring (8)
  • inc around (16)
  • 1 sc, inc, repeat around (24)
  • 2 sc, inc, repeat around (32)
  • 3 sc, inc, repeat around (40)
  • 4 sc, inc, repeat around (48)
  • 5 sc, inc, repeat around (56) 8-17. sc around evenly (56)

Insert safety eyes between rounds 15 and 16, spaced 15 stitches apart.

  • 7 sc, dec, repeat around, then 2 sc (50)
  • Switch to white yarn and sc around (50)
  • In BLO, 3 sc, dec, repeat around (40)
  • 2 sc, dec, repeat around (30)
  • 1 sc, dec, repeat around (20), Stuff the body firmly.
  • dec around (10)
  • dec around (5) F/O, sew the hole closed, and weave in the end.

Optional: Embroider two short lines under each eye using white yarn.

Fins (Make 2, Turquoise Yarn)

  • 5 sc in a mr (5)
  • inc around (10)
  • 4 sc, inc, repeat around (12) 4-6. sc evenly (12)
  • 4 sc, dec, repeat around (10) F/O and leave a yarn tail. Sew the fins to the side of the whale’s body.

Tail (Turquoise Yarn – Make 2 Fins)

  • 6 sc in a mr (6)
  • 2 sc, inc, repeat around (8)
  • 3 sc, inc, repeat around (10)

  • 5 sc, inc, repeat around (14)
  • sc around (14)
  • 5 sc, dec, repeat around (12)

  • F/O after the first piece. For the second, do not fasten off. Instead:
    • ch 1
    • Join to first fin with sl st
    • Continue across: sc in same st, 3 sc, 1 dec, 4 sc
    • On second fin: 4 sc, 1 dec, 4 sc (18)
  • Next rounds:
    • 1 sc, dec, repeat around (12)
    • sc around (12)
    • 1 sc, inc, repeat around (18)
    • 2 sc, inc, repeat around (24) Stuff lightly, only the base, not the fins.
    • sc evenly (24) F/O and leave a long yarn tail. Sew the tail to the back of the whale body between rounds 18 and 20.

Water Spray (White Yarn)

  • 8 sc in a mr (8)
  • 8 sc in the back loops only (8)
  • 2 sc, dec, repeat around (6)
  • sc evenly (6)
  • Work 4 sc in each st (24)
  • 2 sc in each st (48) F/O and hide the yarn.
  • Sew the water spray on top of the whale’s head using white yarn.
