    • Hat is sized for: 6-12 (18-24) mos.

Instructions for Making the Bernat Wee Stripes Knit Pullover And Hat Pattern:

Back:

  • Cast On: With MC and smaller needles, cast on 55 (57-61-63) sts.
  • Garter Stitch: Work 7 rows in garter st (knit every row), noting that the first row is a WS row.
  • Change Needles: Change to larger needles.
  • Stocking Stitch Initial Rows:
    • 1st row: (RS). Knit.
    • 2nd row: K3. Purl to last 3 sts. K3.
    • Rep the last 2 rows until the work from beg measures 2 (2-2½-2½)” [5 (5-6.5-6.5) cm], ending on a WS row.
  • Place Markers: Place markers at each end of the last row.
  • Continue Pattern:
    • Cont in st st for 4 rows (omitting 3 garter side sts).
    • Proceed in Stripe Pat until the work from beg measures approx 6½ (7-7½-8)” [16.5 (18-19-20.5) cm], ending with 2 rows of A.
  • Shape Raglan (Initial):
    • Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. You should have 51 (53-57-59) sts rem.
    • 1st row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. ssk. K2.
    • 2nd row: Purl.
    • Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, rep the last 2 rows 2 (2-2-4) times more, ending with 2 rows of A. You should have 45 (47-51-49) sts rem.
    • Break A.
  • Shape Raglan (MC Only): With MC only, rep the last 2 rows 10 (11-12-11) times more.
  • Hold Stitches: Leave the rem 25 (25-27-27) sts on a st holder.

Front:

  • Work from to as given for Back. This means following steps 1-7 (initial shaping of raglan, ending with breaking A) from the Back instructions.
  • Continue Shaping (MC Only): With MC only, rep the last 2 rows 5 (6-6-5) times more. You should have 35 (35-39-39) sts rem.
  • Shape Neck (Right Side):
    • 1st row: (RS). K2. K2tog. K6 (6-8-8) (neck edge). Turn. Leave rem sts on a spare needle.
    • 2nd row: Purl.
    • 3rd row: K2. K2tog. Knit to last 2 sts. K2tog.
    • Rep the last 2 rows 1 (1-2-2) time(s) more. You should have 5 sts rem.
    • Next row: P5.
    • Next row: K2. K3tog.
    • Next row: P3.
    • Next row: K3tog. Fasten off.
  • Shape Neck (Left Side):
    • With RS facing, slip the center 15 sts onto a st holder.
    • Rejoin MC to rem sts.
    • 1st row: (RS). K6 (6-8-8). ssk. K2.
    • 2nd row: Purl.
    • 3rd row: ssk. Knit to last 4 sts. ssk. K2.
    • Rep the last 2 rows 1 (1-2-2) time(s) more. You should have 5 sts rem.
    • Next row: P5.
    • Next row: K3tog. K2.
    • Next row: P3.
    • Next row: K3tog. Fasten off.

Sleeves (Make 2):

  • Cast On: With MC and smaller needles cast on 31 (33-37-37) sts.
  • Garter Stitch: Work 7 rows in garter st, noting that the 1st row is a WS row.
  • Stocking Stitch: Change to larger needles and work 4 (4-4-6) rows in st st.
  • Increase: Inc 1 st each end of the next row.
  • Stocking Stitch Cont: Work a further 9 rows in st st.
  • Stripe Pat & Increase: Proceed in Stripe Pat, AT THE SAME TIME, inc 1 st each end of the next row and following 10th row(s) 1 (1-1-2) time(s) more. You should have 37 (39-43-45) sts rem.
  • Cont Even: Cont even in Stripe Pat until work from beg measures approx 7 (7½-8-8½)” [18 (19-20.5-21.5) cm], ending with 2 rows of A.
  • Shape Raglans (Initial):
    • Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows. You should have 33 (35-39-41) sts rem.
    • 1st row: (RS). K2. K2tog. Knit to last 4 sts. ssk. K2.
    • 2nd row: Purl.
    • Keeping cont of Stripe Pat, rep the last 2 rows 2 (2-2-4) times more, ending with 2 rows of A. You should have 27 (29-33-31) sts rem.
    • Break A.
  • Shape Raglans (MC Only): With MC only, rep the last 2 rows 10 (11-12-11) times more.
  • Hold Stitches: Leave the rem 7 (7-9-9) sts on a st holder.

FINISHING

  • Seams: Sew raglan seams, leaving the left front raglan seam open.
  • Neckband:
    • With RS facing, smaller needles and MC, pick up and knit 7 (7-9-9) sts down the left front neck edge.
    • Knit 15 from Front st holder, dec 1 st at center.
    • Pick up and knit 7 (7-9-9) sts up the right front neck edge.
    • Knit 7 (7-9-9) from right sleeve st holder, dec 1 st at center.
    • Knit 25 (25-27-27) from Back st holder, dec 1 st at center.
    • Knit 7 (7-9-9) from left sleeve st holder, dec 1 st at center. You should have 64 (64-74-74) sts.
    • Work 8 rows in garter st.
    • Cast off knitways (WS).
  • Buttonhole Band:
    • With RS facing, smaller needles and MC, beg at the raglan cast off edge, pick up and knit 25 (27-29-31) sts along the left front raglan edge and side of neckband.
    • Knit 3 rows.
    • Next row: (RS). K7 (7-7-9). K2tog. yo. K5 (6-7-7). Rep from once more. K2tog. yo. K2. This creates 3 buttonholes.
    • Knit 2 rows.
    • Cast off knitways.
  • Button Band: Work as for Buttonhole Band along the left sleeve raglan edge, omitting all references to buttonholes.
  • Assembly: Sew sleeve and side seams to markers to create side vents. Sew on buttons to correspond to the buttonholes.

HAT INSTRUCTIONS

Note: The Hat is sized for 6-12 (18-24) mos.

  • Cast On: With MC and smaller needles cast on 87 (92) sts.
  • Garter Stitch: Work 9 rows in garter st (knit every row), noting that the first row is a WS row.
  • Increase: Inc 4 sts evenly across the last row. You should have 91 (96) sts.
  • Change Needles & Stocking Stitch: Change to larger needles and work in st st until the work from beg measures 4 (4¼)” [10 (11) cm], ending on a purl row.

Shape Top:

  • 1st row: (RS). K16 (17). K2tog. Rep from to last st. K1. You should have 86 (91) sts.
  • 2nd and alt rows: Purl.
  • 3rd row: K15 (16). K2tog. Rep from to last st. K1. You should have 81 (86) sts.
  • 5th row: K14 (15). K2tog. Rep from to last st. K1. You should have 76 (81) sts.
  • 7th row: K13 (14). K2tog. Rep from to last st. K1. You should have 71 (76) sts.
  • Continue Decreasing: Cont in this manner, dec 5 sts evenly spaced as established on RS rows until 11 sts rem.
  • Finish Top: Break yarn, leaving a long end. Draw the end tightly through the rem sts.
  • Seam: Sew the center back seam.

Pompom:

  • Wind Contrast A (A) yarn around 3 fingers approx 60 times.
  • Remove from fingers and tie tightly in the center.
  • Cut through each side of the loops.
  • Trim to a smooth round shape.
  • Sew to the end of the Hat.
