Pattern Description:

An easy skill level knitting pattern for a baby hoodie. It includes instructions for the back, right and left fronts with pockets, sleeves, and a hooded panel. The pattern is designed for various baby sizes, from 6 to 24 months.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: Bernat® Baby Blanket Tiny™ (14005 Tea Rose), 2 balls for all sizes.
  • Yarn Weight: 3.5 oz/100 g; 316 yds /288 m.
  • Needles: Size U.S. 6 (4 mm) knitting needles.
  • Circular Needle: Size U.S. 6 (4 mm) circular knitting needle 29″ [74 cm] long or size needed to obtain gauge.
  • Notions: 2 stitch holders, Stitch markers, 3 buttons.
  • Measurements:
    • To fit chest measurement:
      • 6 mos: 17″ [43 cm]
      • 12 mos: 18″ [45.5 cm]
      • 18 mos: 19″ [48.5 cm]
      • 24 mos: 20″ [51 cm]
    • Finished chest:
      • 6 mos: 19¾” [50 cm]
      • 12 mos: 20¾” [52.5 cm]
      • 18 mos: 21¾” [55 cm]
      • 24 mos: 22½” [57 cm]
    • Gauge: 17 sts and 36 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in garter stitch.

Instructions for Making the Bernat In The Details Knit Hoodie Pattern:

Back

  • Cast on 42 (44-46-48) sts.
  • Work in garter st (K every row), noting the 1st row is WS.
  • Cont for 9½ (10-10½-11)” [24 (25.5-26.5-28) cm] from Beg, ending on a RS row.
  • Cast off.

Pocket Linings (make 2)

  • Cast on 15 (15-17-17) sts.
  • Work 2″ [5 cm] in stocking st, ending on a purl row.
  • Dec 1 st at center of last row.
  • You will have 14 (14-16-16) sts rem.
  • Leave sts on a spare needle.

Right Front

  • Cast on 23 (24-25-26) sts.
  • Work in garter st, noting 1st row is WS, for 2½” [6.5 cm], ending on a WS row.
  • Place pocket: Next row: (RS). K7. Slip next 14 (14-16-16) sts onto a st holder. K14 (14-16-16) from Pocket Lining. K2 (3-2-3).
  • Cont in garter st until work from Beg measures 8½ (9-9½-10)” [21.5 (23-24-25.5) cm], ending on a WS row.
  • Shape neck:
    • Next row: (RS). Cast off 3 (4-5-5) sts. K to end of row. You will have 20 (20-20-21) sts rem.
    • Next row: K.
    • Next row: Cast off 3 sts. K to end of row.
    • Rep last 2 rows twice more. You will have 11 (11-11-12) sts rem.
  • Cont in garter st until work measures same length as Back, ending on a WS row.
  • Cast off.
  • Place markers for buttons ½” [1.25 cm], 2″ [5 cm], and 3½” [9 cm] down from neck edge; buttons should be spaced 1½” [4 cm] apart.

Left Front

  • Note: Work buttonhole row as follows to correspond to button markers on Right Front: (RS). K to last 4 sts. K2tog. yo. K2.
  • Cast on 23 (24-25-26) sts.
  • Work in garter st for 2½” [6.5 cm], noting 1st row is WS and ending on a WS row.
  • Place pocket: Next row: (RS). K2 (3-2-3). Slip next 14 (14-16-16) sts onto a st holder. K14 (14-16-16) from Pocket Lining. K7.
  • Cont in garter st, working buttonhole rows to correspond with Right Front button markers, until work from Beg measures 8½ (9-9½-10)” [21.5 (23-24-25.5) cm], ending on a RS row.
  • Shape neck:
    • Next row: (WS). Cast off 3 (4-5-5) sts. K to end of row. You will have 20 (20-20-21) sts rem.
    • Next row: K.
    • Next row: Cast off 3 sts. K to end of row.
    • Next row: K.
    • Rep last 2 rows twice more. You will have 11 (11-11-12) sts rem.
  • Cont in garter st until work measures same length as Back, ending on a WS row.
  • Cast off.

Sleeves

  • Cast on 32 (34-36-38) sts.
  • Work in garter st, noting 1st row is WS, for 7 (7½-8-9)” [18 (19-20.5-23) cm], ending on a RS row.
  • Cast off.

Hood

  • Panel Pat (worked over 15 sts):
    • 1st row: (RS). P2. (Wrap 3. K1) twice. Wrap 3. P2.
    • 2nd row: K2. P11. K2.
    • 3rd row: P2. K2. Wrap 3. K1. Wrap 3. K2. P2.
    • 4th row: As 2nd row.
    • These 4 rows form Panel Pat.
  • Sew shoulder seams.
  • With RS facing and a circular needle, pick up and K 15 (17-19-19) sts evenly up Right Front neck edge, 19 (21-23-23) sts across Back neck edge (placing st marker on center back st), and 15 (17-19-19) sts evenly down Left Front neck edge. You will have 49 (55-61-61) sts.
  • Foundation row: (WS). K4. P11. K19 (25-31-31) (slipping marker on center back st). P11. K4.
  • Hood Shaping:
    • 1st row: K2. Work 1st row of Panel Pat across next 15 sts. Place marker between sts. K to center marked st. M1. K marked st. M1. K7 (10-13-13). Place 2nd marker between sts. Work 1st row of Panel Pat across next 15 sts. K2.
    • 2nd row: K2. Work 2nd row of Panel Pat across next 15 sts. Slip marker. K to marked st. Purl marked st. K to 2nd marker. Work 2nd row of Panel Pat across next 15 sts. K2.

    • Cast off. Sew top Hood seam.

Finishing

  • Pocket Edging:
    • With RS facing, K14 (14-16-16) from Pocket st holder.
    • K2 rows (garter st).
    • Cast off knitways (WS).
  • Assembly:
    • Sew sides of Pocket Edging in position on RS.
    • Sew edges of Pocket Linings in position on WS.
    • Place markers on side edges 3¾ (4-4¼-4½)” [9.5 (10-11-11.5) cm] down from shoulders.
    • Sew in sleeves between markers.
    • Sew side and sleeve seams.
    • Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
