Prepparation

  • Prewash Flannel: Wash the flannel fabric before cutting to help prevent uneven shrinking. Cotton strips do not need to be prewashed.
  • Cut Flannel: Cut the flannel fabric into 2.5-inch width strips, matching the width of the cotton jelly roll strips.

Assembling Strips

  • Layer Strips: For each strip, layer the fabrics in this order from bottom to top: one piece of cotton fabric (face down), one flannel strip, one piece of cotton fabric (face up).
  • Sew Down Center: Sew down the center of each layered strip.
    • Tip: Sewing all strips in this manner first is easiest.
    • Purpose: This step keeps the three layers of fabric together, making it easier to sew the strips together quickly, and gives the quilt a finished stitched look.

Join the Strips

  • Arrange Strips: Once all individual layered strips are sewn, lay them out to arrange their order. Ensure that no two strips of the same fabric are next to each other.
  • Sew Strips Together: Sew the arranged strips together using a ½-inch seam allowance.

Finish Quilting

  • Trim Sides: After all strips are sewn together, trim the sides of the blanket to ensure they are straight.
  • Sew Edges: Sew around all four edges of the quilt, again using a ½-inch seam allowance.
  • Result: One side of the quilt will have a nice, finished look, while the other side will have exposed seams.

Post-Sewing

  • Wash & Dry: Wash and dry the quilt a couple of times. This process will create the desired frayed seams.
  • Note on Fraying: The quilt will shed for several washes initially.
  • Seam Treatment: The creator of the quilt did not snip the edges on this specific quilt, preferring them to roll more than fray during washing. However, another statement indicates that slits were cut in the seams to create the ragged look after washing. Both methods can achieve a ragged effect.
