Red Heart Coasters Crochet Pattern

Pattern Description:

This is a BEGINNER skill level crochet pattern for single square coasters. The finished coasters measure 4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm)

The pattern is made using multi-yarn for color interest or assorted solid colors to match décor. Instructions are provided for three different color sequences using colors A, B, and C over four rounds.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn:
    • RED HEART® Gumdrop®: 1 ball of 620 Cherry A. Available as Art. E800 in multicolor 4 oz (113 g), 204 yd (187 m) balls.
    • RED HEART® Soft®: 1 ball each of 2515 Turquoise B, and 9528 Lilac C. Available as Art. E728 in solid color 5 oz (141 g), 256 yd (234 m), print 4 oz (113 g), 204 yd (187 m), and heather 4 oz (113g), 212 yd (194m) balls.
  • Yarn Weight:
    • RED HEART® Soft®, Art. E728: solid color 5 oz (141 g), 256 yd (234 m); print 4 oz (113 g), 204 yd (187 m); heather 4 oz (113g), 212 yd (194m) balls.
    • RED HEART® Gumdrop®, Art. E800: multicolor 4 oz (113 g), 204 yd (187 m) balls.
  • Hook: Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 4.25 mm [US G-6].
  • Measurements: Finished square = 4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm).

Stitches & Abbreviations Used:

  • A, B, C = color A, B, C
  • ch = chain
  • dc = double crochet
  • st(s) = stitch (es)
  • ( ) = work directions in parentheses into same st
  • [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified
  • = repeat whatever follows the as indicated

Instructions for Making the Red Heart Coasters Crochet Pattern:

Beginning the Ring:

  • With your chosen first color, ch 4.
  • Then, slip st in the first ch to form a ring.

Round 1 (Right Side):

  • Ch 3 (this counts as a dc here and throughout the pattern).
  • Work 2 dc in the ring.
  • Then, ch 3, 3 dc in the ring; repeat from twice.
  • Finish this round with ch 3.
  • Join with a slip st in the top of the beginning ch-3.
  • At the end of Round 1, you should have 12 dc and 4 ch-3 spaces.
  • Fasten off.

Round 2:

  • Slip st in the next 2 dc and the ch-3 space.
  • Ch 3.
  • Work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same ch-3 space.
  • Next, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next ch-3 space; repeat from twice.
  • Join with a slip st in the top of the beginning ch-3.
  • Fasten off if changing color for the next round, as per your chosen color sequence.

Round 3:

  • Slip st in the next 2 dc and the corner ch-3 space.
  • OR, if changing color, join your next color with a slip st in any corner ch-3 space.
  • Ch 3.
  • Work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same ch-3 space.
  • Then, *3 dc between the next two 3-dc groups.
  • Immediately following, work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next corner ch-3 space.
  • Repeat from around, ending the last repeat at * (meaning you only complete the ‘3 dc between next two 3-dc groups’ portion before the final corner).
  • Join with a slip st in the top of the beginning ch-3.

Round 4:

  • Slip st in the next 2 dc and the ch-3 space.
  • Ch 3.
  • Work (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same ch-3 space.
  • Next, [3 dc between next two 3-dc groups] twice* (this means you will work 3 dc in the space twice).
  • Then, work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the next corner ch-3 space.
  • Repeat from around, ending the last repeat at * (again, completing the ‘3 dc between next two 3-dc groups’ twice portion before the final corner).
  • Join with a slip st in the top of the beginning ch-3.

Finishing

  • After completing Round 4, fasten off your yarn.
  • Weave in all ends to secure your work and create a neat finish.

Your single square coaster is now complete!
