Instructions for Making the Granny Heart Coaster Pattern:

Foundation Ring
Instruction: Ch 6, sl st in 1st ch to form a ring.
Note: This small ring is the base of your coaster. Almost every granny-style project begins with a center ring, which later supports the clusters and gives structure to the heart. Make sure the ring isn’t twisted before joining.
Building the First Cluster
Instruction: Ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 4 tr in ring, turn.
Note: This first row forms the starting cluster and sets the foundation for the rest of the heart. It may look small, but it gives you a solid anchor for the next rows.
Expanding the Base
Instruction: Ch 4, 3 tr in 1st sp (between 1st 2 sts of prev row), 4 tr in sp between last 2 sts of prev row, turn. Note: Adding clusters on either side begins to widen the heart, transforming the small cluster into a triangular shape.
Adding More Clusters
Instruction: Ch 4, 3 tr in 1st sp, 3 tr in next sp, 4 tr in last sp, turn.
Note: By working into three spaces instead of two, the heart expands further. The triangular base of the heart becomes clearer here.
Making the Heart Wider
Instruction: Ch 4, 3 tr in 1st sp, 3 tr in each of next 2 sps, 4 tr in last sp, turn.
Note: This row balances the sides of the heart by creating additional width. The piece is now beginning to resemble the lower portion of the heart.
Reaching the Widest Point
Instruction: Ch 4, 3 tr in 1st sp, 3 tr in each of next 3 sps, 4 tr in last sp, turn.
Note: This row marks the widest part of the coaster. The heart’s base is fully formed, and the structure is ready to be shaped into curves.
Beginning the Top Curves
Instruction: Ch 4, sk 3 sts, 3 tr in each of next 4 sps, 1 tr in last sp, turn.
Note: Skipping stitches here begins forming the indent at the top of the heart. This creates the dip that separates the two rounded lobes.
Shaping the Lobes
Instruction:
- Ch 4, sk 3 sts, (2 tr, 1 dc) in next sp.
- Ch 4, sl st in next sp.
- Ch 4, (1 dc, 2 tr) in next sp.
- Ch 4, sl st into top of last tr of prev row. Do not turn.
Note: This row completes the two rounded tops of the heart. The left and right lobes are now defined, giving the coaster its recognizable heart shape.
Border – Finishing with a Neat Edge
Instruction:
- Ch 1, 4 sc in each ch-4 sp.
- Work 4 sc around tr posts until reaching foundation ring.
- 6 sc in ring.
- Continue with 4 sc in ch-4 sps and around tr posts.
- At top: 1 sc in each tr st, 3 sc down ch-4, sl st into prev sl st, 3 sc up next ch-4.
- 1 sc in each of next 3 tr sts, 4 sc in next ch-4 sp.
- Sl st into 1st sc, ch 1, cut yarn, fasten off.
Note: The border gives a polished finish, evens out the edges, and ensures the heart lies flat.
Finishing – Securing Your Work
Instruction: Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends securely.
Note: Proper finishing prevents unraveling and keeps your coaster neat. Once done, your granny heart coaster is ready to use, gift, or display as part of your handmade décor.
