Pattern Description:
Skill Level: Easy/Intermediate
This blanket combines the charm of the classic granny square with the modular style of a log cabin layout.
It’s cozy, colorful, and ideal for a baby blanket or lap throw. A unique method of turning your work at the start of each round or row helps maintain consistent texture throughout the piece.
Materials Needed:
- Yarn: About 1200 yards of worsted weight (4/medium) acrylic yarn (Example: Red Heart Soft Yarn – 5 skeins in Off White, Honey, Tangerine, Leaf, and Seafoam; 256 yds/5 oz per skein)
- Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook or size needed to match gauge
- Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker or scrap yarn
- Finished Size: Approx. 36 x 36 in (91 x 91 cm)

- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet

Special Stitches:
- 2-dc cluster: Two double crochets worked in the same stitch/space
- 3-dc cluster: Three double crochets worked in the same stitch/space

Instructions for Making the Granny’s Baby Log Cabin Blanket Pattern:
Initial Granny Square
- With Color A (e.g., Off White):
- Round 1: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 2 dc in ring, ch 2. (3 dc, ch 2) three more times. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. (4 clusters, 4 ch-2 sps) Mark this as the right side.
- Round 2 (Turn): Ch 3, work 2-dc cluster in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 3-dc cluster in same sp, ch 1. In next ch-2 sp: 3-dc cluster, ch 2, 3-dc cluster, ch 1; repeat around. Join. (8 clusters, 4 ch-2 corners, 4 ch-1 sps)
- Round 3 (Turn): Ch 3, 2-dc cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. In ch-2 sp: 3-dc, ch 2, 3-dc, ch 1; in next ch-1 sp: 3-dc, ch 1; repeat around. Join. (12 clusters, 4 ch-2 corners, 8 ch-1 sps)
- Round 4 (Turn): Ch 3, 2-dc cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) twice in ch-1 sps; in ch-2 sp: 3-dc, ch 2, 3-dc, ch 1; repeat around. Join and fasten off. (16 clusters, 4 ch-2 corners, 12 ch-1 sps)
First Log Cabin Block
- With Color B (e.g., Honey), on RS:
- Row 1: Join in any ch-2 corner. Ch 2, dc in same sp, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) in each ch-1 sp across to next corner. End with 2-dc cluster in ch-2 sp. (2 clusters at ends, 3 center clusters, 4 ch-1 sps)
- Row 2 (Turn): Ch 3, 2-dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) twice, 2-dc in next ch-1, ch 1, dc in top of ch-2. (2 dc, 2 2-dc clusters, 2 3-dc clusters, 5 ch-1 sps)
- Row 3 (Turn): Ch 2, dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) three times, 2-dc in final ch-1 sp. (2 2-dc clusters, 3 3-dc clusters, 4 ch-1 sps)
- Row 4 (Turn): Ch 3, 2-dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) twice, 2-dc in final ch-1 sp, ch 1, dc in top of ch-2. Fasten off.
Second Block
- Turn your work clockwise 90°. Join Color C (e.g., Tangerine) in top right ch-2 sp.
- Row 1: Ch 2, dc in same sp, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) across to final corner, 2-dc in last ch-2 sp.
- Row 2-4: Work rows as previously, increasing the number of 3-dc clusters. Always begin and end with 2-dc clusters, and turn after each row. Fasten off at end of Row 4.
Third and Subsequent Blocks
- Continue in log cabin fashion:
- Turn clockwise 90°.
- Join new color in upper right ch-2 corner.
- Repeat 4-row block pattern.
- Continue until blanket is approx. 32 inches across, leaving space for edging.
Edging
- Optional Simple Edging:
- Join yarn in any corner.
- Ch 3, 2-dc in corner, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) in each sp, with corners: (3-dc, ch 2, 3-dc, ch 1).
- Repeat around.
- Join with sl st to top of ch-3.
- Optional Wider Edging:
- Repeat 2-3 more rounds of granny-style edging, turning after each round for texture consistency.
- Each round: Ch 3, 2-dc in first sp, ch 1. (3-dc, ch 1) in each sp; corners: (3-dc, ch 2, 3-dc, ch 1).
- Join with sl st at end of each round.
Finishing
Weave in all ends. Block if desired for best shape.
